Sorry – Illustration Friday

I just couldn't get inspired with this week's topic, "sorry." I kept coming up with the same kind of image...somebody looking sad with a look of forgiveness on their face. I sketched several rough drafts...a child sitting in the corner looking over his shoulder, a woman in tears holding a handkerchief, and a child looking up at his parent with both a look of horror and a look of sorrow on his face. But, I wasn't happy with any of these sketches because I wanted something different.

After taking the weekend off from thinking...I finally decided to do something VERY simple to fulfill my personal commitment of submitting a new illustration each week. So, I finally decided to think of other ways to show how you are sorry. This led to a dozen roses with a card simply stating, "I'm sorry"...which evolved into the illustration above... a "Dear John" letter...but, in my case, a "Dear Louise" letter. This was my inspiration for this week's Illustration Friday.

I also like what you have come up with for the theme. I think it was a hard one to come up with too. I went for the pitiful eyes....LOL, I think many people did. You'rs is fresh and original. Great job. I also love how you put those white outlines around your images and pop them above another image. I'm going to have to try that technique sometime. I love the layered effect it gives.

I like that the note is partially obscured by the rose. I think of Dear John/Louise letters as very cowardly in a way...the person is hiding behind pen and paper, so in a sense, it's sorry in more ways than one! This is a great interpretation of the topic, and a well done illustration.

Cool--I like how the rose looks as if it's almost three dimensional. Nice work!

This is a great take on the topic. I really love your style. I had trouble coming up with something too, and spending the weekend dealing with soggy carpet from all the flooding in our area cut into my painting time. ugh.

The letter is so intimate, somehow the rose blocking most of the words, leaving others, makes it moreso, a very moving piece, and sad. Wonderful!

Very good post. The flower is perfect... deceptively simple... beautiful. The caligraphy on the letter, as painful as it is to read, is almost too beautiful for its message... but maybe that irony is intended. Your style is wonderful, elegant. Peace.

Sure, it's all good until the recipiant gets a prick from the thorny rose... then you have to write another note... and another... and another... ;)
