Monster – Illustration Friday

Click Image for Bigger and Better Image.

I drew a few monsters before coming up with my final piece. I drew a few scary monsters, a couple of "Monsters Inc."-type monsters, and a cute little girl wearing a monster costume. I finally decided that I wanted to show the softer side of a legendary monster, "The Son of Frankenstein." This was my inspiration for this week's Illustration Friday.

I also am sharing my process for my final piece. As you can see below, I originally had the colors brighter. I opted to tone the colors down a bit, and give the illustration an "older" feel. I am happy with the outcome of both, but do prefer the muted a bit more. Which do you like better?

The Process

Original Sketch

Drawing begins in Adobe Illustrator using the Bezier (Pen) tool

Drawing complete in Adobe Illustrator

Close Up of Outlined Image in Illustrator

Color Completed in Adobe Illustrator

Colored Image Placed in Adobe Photoshop to Tone Down Color and Add Texture

Voila! The finished piece was completed!

Wonderful Illo.! I like the perspective of the little girl, emphasizing the 'tallness' of the Monster. What a wonderful concept and execution. you have a good eye.

I'm not an illustrator by profession so it was so cool seeing the process here. This is a wonderful illustration by the way!

I definitely like the muted colors in the final version better. That girl had better pick some more flowers, or move away from the water!

I also vote for the toned down version!
It looks like the monster is defeated by sweetness. What else can you do but eventually smile (I am sure he is about it!) with a cute & fearless girl approaching?

Thanks for the look at your creative process. It's always a treat to see what goes into the making of a piece of art... sort of peeking behind the curtain for the magic.

I like the approach to the gentler side of monsters... My favorite seen from the Frankenstein movie is of Karloff with the little girl. Touching and heart-rending. Nice job, as always

Illustrator rocks! Doesn't it? Great work--Perfect shade of green too, huh? I use that bright green alot. I wish that bright green was something that would come out that bright in the printer. Great work and cool perspective.

Awesome! And absolutely fantastic job of showing the process. Have you ever considered using the pen tool in Photoshop to draw the lines as a vector layer rather than working in Illustrator and then Photoshop?
